We had the pleasure of sitting down with our founder, Lauren Bentley, to ask some burning questions about the journey behind Lauren Bentley Swimwear. From the brand's inception to the inspiration behind our designs, Lauren shared insights on the passion and dedication that have shaped LBS into a symbol of luxury and elegance. We also dove into some of her beach bag staples and favourite swim styles.

Do you remember the moment that the concept of Lauren Bentley Swimwear was born?

"I will never forget it! While I can recall many threads from my childhood, schooling, and career that I realize with hindsight led me to LBS, the defining moment was in 2018 during a vacation with my partner. It was our first proper vacation together—ten days at the newly opened W Punta de Mita hotel. On day one, as I was getting ready for the beach in my chic little leopard print bikini, he pulled on a pair of printed boardshorts with far too many highlighter hues and an inseam that nearly fell below his knees. Realizing no miracle would change the short selection he packed, I stepped back into the closet and changed into a bikini that didn’t completely clash with his selection... Later that trip, as we walked the coastline together, I shared my vision for a swimwear brand. I said, ‘I want to create a brand that caters to women and men; to the people who prioritize their appearance at all times, whether they’re alone or with their partner.’ Once it was spoken into the universe, the universe got to work."

Where do you receive design inspiration?

"For me, design inspiration comes from everywhere—sometimes obvious sources and sometimes from places many wouldn’t consider. Often, visual sources include old fashion imagery, architecture, films like The Talented Mr. Ripley and various 007s. I can also be inspired by experiences or overall design styles and aesthetics. No matter where inspiration comes from, what is most important to me is that our creations evoke feelings of elegance, sophistication, joy, and confidence.”

Quality is one of your main priorities: Can you elaborate on the craftsmanship techniques that are unique to LBS?

"Absolutely. Our craftsmanship starts with sourcing. I have personally handpicked every fabric and trim used in our products, with quality being the first thing I consider. When first developing the collection, I knew the characteristics I wanted in these materials and searched through hundreds of suppliers and thousands of samples to find exactly what I envisioned. Following this, my team and I worked with our renowned factory to develop the construction of each garment. Our construction elements and finishing are distinct from mainstream swimwear because we prioritize longevity over trends, cost, or ease. I am truly proud of what my team, partners, and I have achieved.”

Who do you envision the LBS wearer to be?

"Our envisioned audience is men and women who value fashion, sustainability, and above all else, quality. They are achievers, dreamers, and adventurers. They travel often, whether for business or pleasure, and always seek out exceptional experiences. The Lauren Bentley Swimwear man or woman enjoys life’s simple pleasures while also having a taste for the finer things. They value freedom and time, always achieving elegance without effort."

What are your personal favorite LBS styles?

"I am obsessed with one-pieces for their elegance and ease. I wear all three one-piece styles from our leading collection on repeat! While I love all of our colorways, I gravitate towards Smoked Paprika and Deep Ocean. For bikinis, the Triangle Top is my go-to, as it flatters my body type best. I pair it with any of our three bottoms, choosing based on the occasion or environment. I've also been wearing samples from our unreleased second collection, which I am completely in love with!

For men, I adore the Classic Tailored Trunk. The details are incredible, and it offers such a polished look for a category (swimming trunks) that is typically casual."

What are some of your essential beach bag items?

"Where do I start? I am an overly prepared person and need to have everything I could possibly need with me at all times—haha. I start with sunscreen, typically Colorescience for my face and Nuxe for my body. I always pack a novel and often a journal too. Oh, and I always have snacks! Then there are the obvious bits: sunglasses, a hat, and lip gloss. I also like to have hair accessories like elastics and clips. Speaking of which, my pro-tip for wearing our Cap Sleeve styles is to tie your hair up in advance. It will not only let the suit have its moment, but also keep you from faffing!"
